112911 DOE-IBACOS-GEE Virginia Test House

DOE-IBACOS-GEE

13 Cedar Virginia Test House

Wow! It’s good to be back in the USA!  Luelle and I had a great cruise on the Danube and I’ll talk a little about some of the surprising Energy related things that I saw in Germany at the beginning of the webinar.  BTW if you want to read the blog and see a bunch of pictures click here.

Now it’s time to get serious on my new project here in Virginia. It’s going to be a lab house with DOE and IBACOS… like the one in Fresno. The problem is that for the tests to be valid, they want it as tight as the Fresno house… which was 1 story stucco on a slab, a lot easier configuration than this 92 year old, 2 story balloon framed, leaky house with boxy rooms, over a half basement and half crawl space.

So we have our work cut out for us. Right before we left, I met with Kevin and Chris of IBACOS on site, and we came up with two floor plan changes that will make the home work a lot better for their purposes and make it more sellable or rentable for us.    Here are the floor plans that you can look at ahead of time and see if you can guess what our modifications will be. Hint, If you’ve been around GEE you know we always remove walls for better traffic flow.  This time it’s also for air flow.

We’ll also discuss some ways to reduce the heat load besides reducing infiltration… windows, and what to do with that basement and crawl as well as what the ultimate heating and cooling system might be upon completion of testing. Looking forward to your input, particularly our cold weather friends.
