DOE-GEE 13 Cedar Virginia Test House Update

DOE-GEE 13 Cedar Virginia

Test House: Incredible Shell Sealing

Tonight We’ll explore what it takes to create a workforce capable of producing the tight, performing houses that we’ll need to achieve our 2020 and 2030 energy use goals.  BTW, we are not on track to meet them with the status quo.  Finding and training a competent labor force is the second most often heard complaint that I hear from my contractor and program operating friends. (First is finding customers willing to pay what good Home Performance work costs)

The problem can be approached from both a small and a large perspective.   After our recent results on 13 Cedar,  I’m convinced that I can share the formula to recruit, train and motivate crews capable of delivering world class Home Performance… (at least the shell seal and insulation part.  HVAC will be another webinar)

An obvious question arises:  Can the methods we’ll discuss be expanded to “Scale?”  Can what we do at GEE work for a larger company? I don’t have the definitive answer to that question but I do still have a Weatherization company with about 50 employees that produce about 5,000 weatherization jobs a year with top pass rates. We’ll look at how those employees are selected and trained and managed.   (Quite differently than what we do at GEE)

“Green Jobs” is a highly charged, political football… Politicians, Regulators, Grantwriters and Program Managers all want this thing to work. But it seems they inject complications that make the process difficult and great home performance rare and difficult to achieve.

Tonight, I’ll show exactly what was done to tighten up 13 Cedar to very low leakage.  I’ll share how we train people at both a small and larger company.  I hope you’ll join us and share your thoughts on training the the labor force to produce Quality and Quantity Home Performance projects.
